When Crisis Drives Action

8/1/24

Living in a constantly changing environment impacted by heavy weather events can be devastating, but it also may inspire action. Such is the case of youth environmentalist Bibishika Khanal.

Nepali law student and Climate Cardinals volunteer Bibishika Khanal has witnessed first-hand extreme climate in the form of flooding. In her community in Kathmandu, rapid waters run through the streets and threaten local agriculture and infrastructure.

“These experiences have underscored the urgency of climate action for me personally,” says Khanal, “reinforcing the need for sustainable practices and global cooperation to mitigate and adapt to these changes effectively.”

As part of her journey through the climate movement, Khanal has been translating with Climate Cardinals for a year.

“Volunteering with Climate Cardinals has been incredibly fulfilling. It has deepened my understanding of global environmental issues and reinforced the importance of accessibility in climate education. Being part of a team that translates climate information into different languages has also highlighted the global nature of the climate crisis and the need for diverse, inclusive solutions.”

As a translator, she is exposed to information vital to understanding the ever-evolving landscape of the climate movement and is directly involved in expanding its accessibility to non-English speakers.

“Overall, it’s been a rewarding experience that’s empowered me to make a tangible difference in addressing climate change.”
